About Fundo Esperanza

The extent of Fundo Esperanza encompasses the central valley, crossing the Cordillera de la Costa all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Its beautiful beaches, calm rivers, and amazing views make this property very appealing and suitable for preservation.

For the most part, the surface is covered by evergreen indigenous forest, as well as meadows thickets and burnt larch trees. The soil is currently being used for the following purpose: logging, firewood, livestock farming, fishing, extraction of benthic resources and small-scale tourism.

Fundo Esperanza is located in southern Chile on the threshold of Patagonia, northwest of the city of Puerto Montt, on the coast of the commune of Fresia, in an area known as Llico Bajo.

It is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to travel a distance of 100 kilometres of between El Tepual airport in Puerto Montt, known as the main entry point of the region, to the country estate of Fundo Esperanza.

Whereas most of the road is paved and because the areas with gravel are well maintained, you can access the country estate at any time of the year no matter the weather conditions.

Surface and Surveying

The total estimated lot area of Fundo Esperanza encompasses 13.878 hectares (ha), of which 46% are native forest, 25,9% is adult forest, and 20,1% is second-growth of evergreen forest.

In view of the fact that 25 years ago a big wildfire consumed most of its large forest, 25,6% of the country estate is burned surface, which is currently naturally regenerating.

Furthermore, 3.862 ha (26,3% of the total area) is covered with thickets (arborescens, meadowland, etc).

By the banks of Llico River, close to human settlements that once existed in that area, there are 215 ha of meadows representing 1.5% of the lot.

The country estate has 7 kilometres (km) of beach shore and 44 km of river bank, and a somewhat sinuous surveying with the large ravines in the surroundings of Marilan River and the Pacific Coast.

Energy Potential

Fundo Esperanza has great potential of generating electric power. Its attractive eolian and hydrological resources make it an excellent alternative for the development of non conventional renewable energy projects (NCRE).

The country estate forest resources allow a wide variety of activities, such us logging and firewood extraction, generating energy from biomass though the usage of forest waste, and promoting sustainable native forest management practices by reforestation either to limit and/or reduce emissions of greenhouse-gases. Wit the aid of Fundación Chile (FCh) a memorandum of understanding (MOU) is being developed for a project that involves enhanced forest management and carbon credits.

Resources and Agriculture

Along the country estate is the coast, there are two areas of management of benthic resources currently administered by two local unions of artisanal fishermen. The main resource extracted is the Chilean abalone (Concholepas concholepas).

At the northeastern of the country estate, in the Peuchen sector, companies must comply with the legal requirement of doing compensatory reforestations. The company that is standing out in this matter is SAESA (Sociedad Austral de Electricidad Anónima).

Tourism and Conservation

Fundo Esperanza has great potential as tourist destination, as it has a privileged natural environment with rivers, mountains, virgin beaches and forests.

Trekking circuits, horseback riding, mountain biking, etc, can be developed in addition to other activities such as kayaking, fishing, environmental education and dolphin and whale sighting.
